Octomom is a local story here and is garnering much press. She has no visible means of support, has at one point filed for bankruptcy, and has a string of job dismissals and abandoned homes behind her. Grandpa looks like the only income she has, though one would guess she's got some governmental support as well (or has in the past), meaning this is my tax dollars at work. :-/

Speculation is that she's hoping for the freebies multiple births sometimes get from companies, such as the vans GM gave to an octuplet family a few years ago. Whether hiding from the press and demanding anonymity means this guess is wrong, or is their attempt to get even more attention is up for debate. Either way, she's so unpopular, at least locally, that I doubt many companies will be lining up to give her free stuff. It could be a PR disaster for them.

Octomom's mom said that octomom had IVF, which means some crazy doctor out there implanted eight fertilized embryos. Who *does* that, regardless of how many kids she has had in the past, and regardless of how fertile she is or isn't? That's just mind-blowing.

The infertility community is up in arms, upset that this is making them all look like morons. Questions abound as to whether octomom managed to dupe the fertility clinic into thinking she was childless, and whether she even had a psych evaluation before the treatment. Such an odd, odd story.

Oh, and for the people suggesting this family is Quiverfull, Quiverfull people don't believe in fertility treatment just like they don't believe in contraceptives, because they believe it usurps God's authority in giving or not giving children, so that's not what's going on here...
