reannon reminded me of this
when i was fifteen i went to Ottawa (Canada's federal capital) and among other things we toured the Parliament buildings and we sat in on a session. That day they were discussing some ... i think it was sexist, it was somehow offensive anyway ... remark that the Fisheries minister had made. (yes, in Canadian politics we have a fisheries minister. for more fun ask me about the 1995/96 turbot war.) and i remember thinking that this was insanely stupid. i had been expecting, you know, actual law being discussed. (i was young and obviously had lived a sheltered life.)
That was a long time before i moved to the States. and obviously this sort of thing hasn't changed.
And if five minutes (not to mention the Fox News headline "obama murders cow to eat pagan lunch" wasn't enough) (no, they really said that) wasn't bad enough, Sean Hannity (who i guess is some Republican talking head?) took issue with the condiment in question.
i can't even blame Free Trade for this.*
* (Canadian readers may remember the gigantic fuss the Free Trade talks were (ZOMG the americans will take away our distinct nation status (or was that just Quebec whining?) and NAFTA was worse, of course)
