Musical Notes

Of course, Fountains of Wayne isn't touring any further west than Milwaukee, except for CA, which is in three days. *pout* (Edit: any of you Portland based people or anyone familiar with the area ever find yourselves accidentally writing 'Milwaukie?)

There's a miniscule possiblility that we might possibly maybe hypothetically go to Summerfest in Milwaukee, which is the end of next month. Ben Folds AND Fountains of Wayne are playing, so it would be a good trip and definitely worth it. But I don't want to think about this too much, 'cause we might not, too. We shall See.

Today's package from Newbury Comics:

  • Beatles Live at the BBC
  • Beatles Anthology Disk 2 (I didn't care much for the first one; the second was my hands down fave, and the third after that. I love the stoned version of 'And Your Bird Can Sing.')
  • Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  • Something Beautiful, GBS

This further proves that the only thing I miss about my ex was his CD and record collection. That can be strategically replaced over time.

I don't know what it is about GBS. (I'm feel like I'm skirting blasphemy here.) I like them well enough. But I keep running into people that want or have wanted to listen to them all the time. Generally when they're first introduced to them. I mean, I can off the top of my head think of at least six people that fall into this category without straining.
My problem is that a good deal of Celtic music tends to sound the same to me. I tend to be leery of genre based music for that reason; there's a certain amount of genre blending - there's a celtic sound and a slow jazz sound and a big band sound and a folk sound and a grunge sound and blah blah. So if you're not in the mood for that sound specifically you're not going to want to hear it. And if you listen to a certain sound repeatedly (at least if you're me) it tends to wear on you. And then you have to go listen to something else for a while.
I keep running across fans of 'genre music' and getting sick of it. The last time that happened was folk, back in the days of the Great Roommate Experiment. Some of it was good. And then it got very, very tiring. And then I had an allergic reaction to it. I still can't listen to folk yet. After nearly a year away, too.

That said there's certain themes that come up in my listening selections. I like harmonies a lot. I'm a fan of piano; I enjoy intelligent and quirky lyrics. That's kind of 'me'. But I don't see that as being tied to a genre.
One of the fun things of having a kid is that you get to introduce them to the things that you love. I like getting new music and exposing him to it and seeing what he likes. He likes a lot of the same things I do, although he's more partial to harmonies and vocoders and effects and heavy rhythms. So he likes Freezepop and the Chemical Brothers, but he likes the Beatles and Guster and Coldplay and Ben Folds Five, too.

I also don't like the new Vienna Teng album as much as I adore the first one. I like it, yes. But I don't utterly adore it. I think it might grow on me over time though.

Well, if you want to. The point being that music without words is not as strange as it sounds coming from a writer, because there's always words flowing on some other plane.

I suppose.

I just realized you're in for one hell of an esoteric roller-coaster ride if you stick around with me for a while... the 'writer' side of me is... uh... well... not representative of some other stuff. Mm.

(I'll try to be careful.)

This is not a bad thing. :-) I live on an esoteric roller coaster. Have you read my husband's journal? :-D
Seriously, I find the most interesting people in life are the people with that kind of attitude toward life in general. So don't worry about it.

No, I haven't. Has he read mine?

(Actually all the really juicy stuff is weirdness filtered. I'm experienced enough to be cautious now.)

He keeps meaning to friend you (because I keep talking about the Saga). I'm not sure if he's done it as yet, but that's more a 'I keep meaning to and forgetting' thing. :-)

I added him first. In case that helps.

My god! He sounds very, um, frenetic. I'm exhausted just skimming his journal. I'm panting, no joke. And my heart rate is up. Jesus Christ on a popsicle stick, as Zeph might say.

*laughs*
He's a little strange. But he's harmless.
