it's been one week since you looked at me

So the child is taking respiridal for his tantrums and general autism-based behavioral issues. It's working pretty well, except that it has this one annoying side effect - he eats a lot. And I mean a LOT. And the tantrums basically stop being all the time and start being largely around food. (There are still less tantrums, however.) This is a known side effect with respiridal, apparently.

We take the child off gluten because of Other Stuff that I'm not going to discuss because no one cares about the specifics of my child's gut. Really, if I didn't have to care about it? I wouldn't care about it, believe me. I choose not to share that part with you lot.

And ... the constant eating is stopping. And the tantrumings are becoming less of a big thing. And the Other Stuff is pretty much gone.

... dude.

Also - the cat is playing with a grape. He thinks it is the Best Thing Ever.

There are some people who theorize that autism is caused by a wheat gluten allergy. I'm not going to give up my bread, though.

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
What I've heard is that wheat gluten and/or casein (milk protein) causes some autism-like symptoms in some people, but since autism is a diagnosis based on symptoms, it doesn't work for everyone to exclude them.

Ah.

We'd originally tried this as a means of fixing ... the other problem, figuring that if we got any behavioral results at all, it would be a bonus. People on Microsoft's "autism info exchange" list had been having varied success with it (which actually made it make *MORE* sense than hearing all of the claims from daytime talk shows and other forms of stereotypical "housewife entertainment"™). I can't say I buy a definite statement that autism is caused by a single factor, though.

Win!

we had the same problem with risperdal. Bottomless Pit Mousie, and SMS already has an overeating componant. Gleh!

The change to Abilify has *REALLY* helped.

This is going to sound so crazy, but I love hearing about what your cats are playing with. About that plastic ring, mine always play with the little plastic ring that comes off of milk jugs. We call them "rings of power" for some reason. LOL And my other cat likes to play with hazelnuts. No other kinds of nuts; we tried to get her to play with almonds, walnuts, peanuts, but no-go. Just hazelnuts. Another one's favorite toy is a bra strap from one of those bras where the straps are removable. I couldn't find the second strap and so I let one of the cats play with it. Seriously, she won't let it out of her sight once she has it. It's hilarious.

Anyway, yes, I love hearing about other people's crazy cats. LOL

Our cats are seriously on crack. *laughs* Neko has twice gotten himself shut in the linen closet; he's learning how to walk on his back legs (seriously: he can take two steps now), he body-checks for pettings. <3

The gluten thing is known quantity (reducing 'bad' behaviour). So glad to hear it's helping in more ways that one! *hugs*

That's kinda awesome. :)

Interesting and wonderful! Diet is powerful. The Beetle's entire babyhood was spent greased with various compounds to try to relieve her increasingly chapped and cracked and painful face and regions, until we took her off dairy, and poof! Instantly clear. And no one suggested it: we just threw things at her until something stuck. In this case, a soy bean.

Yay for you!

[identity profile] mirrormargaret.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear so much about the evils of gluten and dairy, I sometimes think I ought to try to give them up. (I'm on Risperdal.) But ... I can't stand the idea! (wimp)

Grape! Yeah! :D

This is very good. I'm so happy. *grins* *cuddles* I hope it continues.

Wow. Amazing. :D

That's awesome!

ps. I haven't forgotten about your request about gluten-free foods. I have just been running around a lot. <3

Oh honey, whenever you have time, don't worry about it!
(ps: I have fanfic smut if you want to read it? I hate pushing my own stuff on people, but you seem to like, and you were away. <3)

I've been trying to get in touch with the one other mother of an autistic boy that did the diet thing...there really IS something to it! (Haven't made contact yet - but I wanted you to hear it from her, yourself.)

Hang in there -

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've heard and from what Chris has been hearing (he's on the Parents-Of-Auties email list at work) is that it helps some children but not all - same with the casein-free diets. Which makes sense when you figure that autism is a diagnosis based on 'x symptoms exist' not on 'y underlying cause exists'.
