rikki tikki tavi says run and find out

Dude.

DUDE.

The child does not hear properly.

His actual functional hearing (not tested on the test he had when sedated - that just tested that all of the physical structures that are needed in hearing are actually there) is just - not. The signals aren't getting through.

This opens up a lot of new and interesting resources. And it may negate the autism diagnosis eventually. But it explains a LOT.

Wow.

Yes that can explain a whole HELL of a lot.

So, he's not deaf (as he enjoys music, right?), but doesn't interpret speech and other things?

[identity profile] zaratyst.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Many deaf folks enjoy music too. You can feel the beat in most cases. Just sayin'.

Wah WAH! *grin* I trust you'll get the reference. I realize it might sound odd to say congrats, but seriously, knowing what's up is what it's all about!

Yay for more information. To reference an earlier post, he is an innnnnteresting monster :)

[identity profile] gizmometer.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
holy crap!!

that's AMAZING news. omg. keep up on the sign, then! hah. wow.
there are definitely resources out there! for serious! this I am learning by working in that exact system!

does he hear at all? orrr are we talking profound deafness? cause if that's the case, I am totally o.O at whoever got you an autism diagnosis without first finding this out. cause being blind and being deaf can go very much hand in hand, and if you're just not receiving that sensory information, then, yeah, your interactions with your world are gonna be kind of weird!

but, wow. intriguing. hopefully this will help him (and you) quite a lot. <3

I hope that this can be remedied and make things easier for all of you. :)

[identity profile] eleri.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
dude, that makes the road to helping him through the universe so much clearer. Cool.

Curious: How do they test functional hearing on him?

[identity profile] cbpotts.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW!

I'm not sure if it is appropriate to say congratulations, but hooray!! Knowing what is going on is always better than not knowing :)

Hooray!

I'm not sure if it is appropriate to say congratulations, but hooray!!

I sort of had to wonder how my coworkers would take ... not so much the news, but the fact that I wasn't totally falling apart over it, insofar as ... I KNOW deaf-blind from a resource perspective. It's just another branch of the same people that deal with the blind, which was one of my former ... employers? No, that's not right ... clients, I guess, way back sometime BCE1. But yeah, there's an established path for this, there's 120 years of active research, etc.
1 As in, before I worked in the Windows® CE department at Microsoft. Feels kind of literally like BCE sometimes though.

Wow. I mean, just wow. I hope this opens up more ways you can reach him - he's so damn smart!!

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That is amazing!

The would also explain why he'd like something like blast beats and Hammond organ, they're very abrasive and cut through other sounds very well.

[identity profile] kalmn.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
hurray diagnosis!

[identity profile] stef-tm.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Just wow. I hope this opens up new modalities for Sean to learn about the world (and for the world to learn about Sean!)

[identity profile] scarcrest.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. That could change the whole paradigm there.

Wow! That's, I want to say good but that's not quite right. But it is great that they've made this discovery. It can only be helpful to know exactly what's going on and how to treat it.

Holy crap, well, that would certainly explain a few LOT of things.

I too am curious how this affects his autism diagnosis.

(Dude. How does he get to be six-ish [IIRC], with all these doctors, and no one noticed this before?!?)

[identity profile] tallin.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because sticking things in his ears and getting him to cooperate long enough was a Process®, is my guess. And so much of his behavior could just as easily have been accounted for by the autism diagnosis, and he was responding to music.

So ... maybe ... he wasn't deaf enough to trump the autism diagnosis, perhaps?

Wow, I'm really happy for you even though deafness also has its own hurdles. I actually attended a deafness seminar at Pri-Med this year, and I was surprised by all of the new technologies available to deaf children, adults, and elderly. So, there is definitely great resources out there, great technology.

to echo [livejournal.com profile] ecwoodburn - how does the kiddo get to be, what, six? with no one figuring this out?

still, good news. a diagnosis you can work with! with resources!

[identity profile] cutie-patutti65.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! So what happens next?

[identity profile] romanshoes.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's really great! I remember my mom worked with a guy who had a similar situation when he was little (they thought he was mentally deficient and he was just deaf) - turned out he was actually a genius and became a psychiatrist. Who knows, you might have an evil genius on your hands, instead of just something evil.

*blinkblink* Wow. Huh. So it's sensorineural deafness, then? (Which is pretty much what I have)
