Fire alarm. There was a flood in one or more of the laundry rooms and the water got into some of the machines. small electrical fire; is out now, everyone is fine (except possibly the washing machines/dryers. since they're not sentient it's okay.)

yep! we had fire trucks outside the building and all that. (fortunately our apartment contains our own separate laundry facilities, so we don't even need to worry about broken machines.)
