music to make out to

[livejournal.com profile] geekchick has provided me with this important information: the decemberists are at sxsw and are doing a live webcast of their new album tonight. the only drawback is that it's at 1AM EDT (10 PM PDT) but some people may well be up; i'm going to try to be. If you miss it all of their NPR stuff is archived here. [livejournal.com profile] hannahrorlove and I listened to their last webstreamed concert together. It's good stuff.

it's kind of hard to describe what they're actually like: my best guess is 'historical literary-allusion cheerfully macabre folktale-classical indie with a good beat and a pound of Lewis Carroll's favorite hallucinogenics stirred in' but hopefully others will leave their own descriptions in the comments. if you're going to take the reccomendations of an autistic seven year old, they're one of the boy's favorite bands.

Broad term: Folk-rock.
Narrow term: Baroque pop.
Related term: Storytelling songwriting.

To someone like my dad, who has particular musical taste, I'd say the band "does folksong-like pieces with a large instrumental backing, like playing an old sea shanty with an orchestra."
