open letter to my darling child
Dear son (I called him 'son'.)
I love you. And I realize that four years old is not considered to be the height of reasoning. But if you wake up at 5:30, you are going to be tired and cranky by ten. Then mommy is going to get frustrated with you by the time it is time to go to the babysitters, and it becomes an unpleasant experience for everyone concerned.
SO WHY DO YOU DO THIS ALL THE TIME? I have cultivated things to allow you to sleep in until nine. WHY DO YOU NOT DO THIS?
Love,
Your mother, who sometimes wonders why she does not drink.
