To [livejournal.com profile] deza:
I was at the farmer's market today and was hooked into buying some gorgeous alpaca DK weight yarn in a kind of coffee latte colour. The woman kindly pointed out which one of her adorable alpacas had provided the fiber, and I was totally sold.

So yeah, sell your future alpaca yarn at farmer's markets. Unexpected, but definitely a good idea, the knitters aren't expecting it and they're weak.

(They also had spinnable fiber.)

Dangerous people! Peaches and yarn. Hit me when I wasn't looking.

Other things I've found today: someone's Christmas gift, five dishtowels for a quarter, Japanese cucumbers (for refrigerator pickles) and thai iced chai. (omg yum) And a good coffee shop which is currently making lemon waffles for me.

I love my neighborhood. I may never move again.

oh I almost fell into that particular trap myself.

They had handspun yarn for $17 a ball. I found myself unable to justify it so I stayed away.

I will admit to a momentary temptation though. *wry*

At the farmers market? WTF? Drives me crazy when places sell stuff other then food. i cant eat alpaca!

Funny enough the Kingston farmers market had yarn last week and that didnt bug me.

But surely farmers farm alpacas and so have the right to sell their fibre and wool (alpaca produce) at the farmers market? ;-p

[identity profile] seattlejo.livejournal.com 2007-08-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well yes, but the Seattle Farmers Markets are pretty closely controlled in regards to what you can have and can't have. The diversity of non produce products at this point makes me wonder how many produce vendors are left out because there isnt space.

Ah - right.

Sorry to jump in there but I live in a fairly rural area of the UK and farmers' markets are a solid revenue stream for a lot of producers like alpaca farms which are a small, niche market.

Our farmers' markets are not "only-edible-produce-of-farms markets" and so I did not understand your comment. Hence why I asked. Thank you for explaining that Seattle farmers' markets are more strictly regulated than ours! *hugs*

That said, they were also selling peaches: I think that was their main product and the focus of the stand. The alpaca was a side product, which I didn't make clear initially. :-)

hah! iwas at the same market today (mmm...organic heirloom tomatos.....) and must have been after you because all they had left was bags of fuzz ;)

I'm thinking the alpaca fuzz goes in the same category as the nice vietnamese lady who sells awesome lemon cucumbers and beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers.

they grew it themselves, or harvest it from the wild, right?

I think its funny that we both were there today. of course, we had to hit weaving works first, it being a pilgramage site and all....

I actually live just up the street from Weaving Works. :-D It's horribly dangerous, living right there - you just go in to get needles and it sucks you in and then you've suddenly got a hundred dollars worth of Noro. :-D

I used to live really close to there, its a great neighborhood!

I was picking up yarn, etc for my sock swap partner, and at first pass, the socks would have cost about $60 for the yarn alone. eep! put it back and went for a still nice but less chic chic yarn :)

My aunt's father-in-law used to raise alpacas :D Sadly, I had already moved from NJ when he started doing it, so I never got to see them.

I love Seattle and, if it was not in the US, would move there like a shot! Both times I have visited I have not wanted to come home...

I went to a crafts fair today and TRIED to fall into an alpaca trap but there were none to be had! No spinners or fibre at ALL!

It was sad. :(

That is /depressing/. Bleh.
