phinnia: smiling dolphin face (paper stars)

a few interesting things I've picked up between naps

Somewhere on my friends page or maybe it was twitter someone mentioned The BBC language page, which has some good language learning resources. Good stuff. (They use the "James Wilson Method" of teaching languages - there are actually soap operas there that you can use as learning aids. No, really.)

Also, a blog full of historical images from the first part of the last century: Shorpy.com.

I'm feeling better emotionally today (parenthetical note: omfg having a period SUCKS, why can't we just have warning lights? 'pregnant' 'not pregnant'. Seriously. would save so much time and bullshit.) I am, however, ridiculously tired. I'm dividing my time between napping, snuggling with the boy, my latest knitting project (it's on ravelry if you're there - and if you are there, add me! i'm phinnia, as usual) reading shibori knits and contemplating 'resist felting' (my kingdom for a dryer) before napping again. Hoping there will be writing soon. That's the plan if I can negotiate with the body around naps.

I agree re: periods. Mine hit me last night and is not helping my mood today...and probably didn't help my little explosion of anger yesterday, now that I think about it. (Not that I'm someone who blames their actions on PMS, but idk it could be a factor sometimes I guess.)

it probably was.
(was it you that made the 'someone is wrong on the internet' wilson macro? i desperately need a copy of that)

yup, that was me ;)

omg look at him <3 thank you for making me post this, i cheered up a little <3

Paper stars! Cuteness!

Yes on the warning light!

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
<3 i like them. <3

Warning lights are so old-school, though. Modern reproductive systems ought to come with twitter accounts and RSS feeds.

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. Although a twittering uterus would just be weird. We'd probably get tabloid updates from Britney Spears' or Paris Hilton's Uterus Twitter Feed.

Ah yes, BBC learning - my entire German GCSE was thanks to the really crappy german version of friends. Zehr gut ja.
As for warning lights - it'd get my vote.

i'm working on a design spec for human 2.0. it'll be much better, i think.

Warning lights would be awesome! Especially since I had my tubes tied 12 years ago and still have to deal with the monthly "not pregnant blood." I'd so be happier if the fallopian tubes just told the uterus "don't bother to grow a lining anymore, we're closed for business." *g*

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
exactly! the whole thing is ridiculously designed. I don't want any more kids, why can't i just shut the whole process down? seriously.

[identity profile] gizmometer.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
fuck periods. not literally. but i mean really. to hell with them. (new b.c.p. i'm on = progesterone only = like roulette with my uterus. could be one week apart, could be five or six! JOY.)

also. you can felt without a dryer just fine. people have been felting long before electricity. it's the heat and agitation that are important. sink or bathtub, rubber gloves, lots of rubbin' (or I've also heard, attack with [clean] toilet plunger).

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
so you want hot water? i think last time i tried it the water wasn't hot enough. maybe that's it.
i've got an IUD which is miraculous, as I only get a little emotional bullshit + spotting, which is AWESOME compared to the usual.

[identity profile] gizmometer.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, hot hot water, as hot as you can stand - I heated mine up in my kettle. :)

nice! jeals.

I'm loving the warning light idea. =D

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
if i have any say in it human 2.0 is going to be SO MUCH BETTER. <3

[identity profile] burgundy.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
If the tech includes a warning light, then can't it also include, like, a pause button? Some way to say "hey, uterus, there will be no babies anytime soon. I'll let you know, ok? So, just chill for a while, take the time off, send me a postcard from Maui." Not that I particularly like the idea of my uterus going to Maui without me, but you get what I mean.

[identity profile] phinnia.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh YES. absolutely. I figure it'll be like device manager. I want to disable the uterus driver. <3

The Quant?

It is SO COOL! I immediately added the pattern to my faves. I am SO making one of these. I have some Jitterbug that I bet would be pretty.

I'm in love with it.The entrelac is fiddly at first but is totally fascinating as it works up. And the yarn i'm using (a soy/wool blend) is amazingly soft and shiny. <3 I can't get pictures to load though! (I don't want to put them on flickr because the intended recipient sometimes looks at my photos there and the photobucket uploader won't work.) <3

[identity profile] natalief.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
why can't we just have warning lights? 'pregnant' 'not pregnant'.

Or, better still, have an On/Off switch for our reproductive systems and periods, as in a "I am open to periods and getting pregnant" / "F*** off with the periods and pregnancy risk" switch!

*hugs*
