Title: instant karma's gonna get you (part 4)
Author:
phinnia
Pairing: House/Thirteen; Wilson/Volakis (ctb); House/Wilson friendship
Spoilers: 4-7 "Ugly", 4-12 "Don't Ever Change."
Rating: PG still
Disclaimer: Not mine. Still broke. Don't sue.
Notes: Dinner. In which stories are alluded to several times and things go better than they usually do, but Amber still feels kind of bad for Thirteen in spite of it.
(this is part four, and the thing still isn't done. this is astounding. I don't do plots or chaptered things! I don't have an attention span!)
The beginning of dinner was, as House had expected, awkward. The only thing he had to be grateful for so far was that by hanging back in the parking lot with Thirteen he'd been able to miss Wilson and Amber's little nesting dance. And thankfully they had a table already, so there was no repeat of the scene in the fusion bar.
"We've already ordered wine." Wilson smiled as they sat down. "I assume you're having beer?"
He was looking at House, but Thirteen also nodded, which earned her a slightly startled look from her date.
"See, you do have something in common."
"Do that again, Jimmy, and I'm telling the story of you pissing my couch." House mocked him in the same relentlessly chipper tone, and then smirked at the girls' startled expressions and Wilson's blush. "Ooopsy, too late."
"It was a particularly stupid prank." Wilson coughed, and took a drink of his water.
"It was an excellent prank."
Silence.
"So, uh, Thirteen - and listen, I'm so, so sorry about all the - stuff - that went on before ..." Amber leaned across the table, tossing her hair a bit. Wilson shot her a grateful glance.
"That's okay. All's fair in love and fellowship applications, right?"
"Exactly." Amber laughed. "I was kind of suprised that James said you'd be joining us tonight. I ... honestly didn't know Greg was seeing anyone ... have you been dating long?"
"No." Thirteen shrugged, fiddling a little with her place setting before looking up. "He tried to make me think the flowers he sent were from a stalker, but I kind of figured he did it."
"I'm improving." House interrupted. "I shot my last girlfriend."
"With a paintball gun." Wilson interjected quickly, trying to stave off an incident after he caught a glimpse of Amber's stare of horror. "That's how they met."
"I know." Thirteen murmured.
House blinked. "You do?"
"I ran into Dr. Cameron on the way out of the hospital this afternoon. She asked about the flowers."
"Between her and Chase the whole hospital'll know about this by midnight." Wilson muttered. Amber hid a grin behind her hand.
"She told you about Stacy?" House focused his usual diagnostic stare on Thirteen.
Thirteen, to her credit, didn't flinch, but she had encountered it in the work setting, after all. "Yes. Well, I think 'warned me that you probably still weren't over her" might have been the more appropriate term, but it's pretty likely she's just jealous. I mean, she did kind of make an ass of herself when those documentary filmmakers were around."
He considered this theory for a moment and nodded. "True."
Another silence.
Fortunately for everyone, that was when the waiter arrived.

Wilson and Amber were hanging around, waiting for the server to come back with his Amex card. Thirteen was in the ladies' room and House was exchanging what looked to be racing tips with one of the busboys, chattering in a combination of hand gestures, Hindi and English.
"Well, that went well." Wilson rubbed the back of his neck.
"I'm not trying to be rude, seriously, James, but are you kidding?" Amber touched up her lipstick with a tiny pocket mirror. "The conversation coded around the appetizers and should have been pronounced by the time the main course got here. We ended up talking to each other, House folded all the napkins into origami and poor Thirteen - and that's something I thought I'd never say - got ignored by her own damn date for the most part."
"No, that ... actually was ... 'well', for House. No one cried, no one left the restaurant, there was no slapping, and a minimal amount of lying was involved in the transaction."
"Seriously?"
"House has had three dates in the past ... well, since Stacy left. Two were Cameron and one of those was blackmail - she blackmailed him, long story - and one was the ex-girlfriend of a clinic patient, who he lied to and said was a job interview."
"That's ...."
"That's House, and he's coming over here so we'll talk about this later, okay?" He kissed her on the cheek.
"Hey Dad, can I have the keys to the car?" House's tone was purposefully light, but Wilson knew him well enough to know his heart wasn't really in it.
"I'll drive you home."
They all turned. Thirteen had come up behind them quietly and was standing there with her hands in her coat pockets.
"If you want." she continued with a shrug.
"Um, sure."
Wilson looked at House, eyebrows raised in a question. House shrugged almost imperceptibly and followed Thirteen out to the parking lot.
"Okay." Wilson shook his head as if to clear it. "That ... huh. Maybe it actually did go well."
(apparently still to be continued.)
