phinnia: smiling dolphin face (light and shade)
Ran was in his fourteenth summer when he began to hear things.

It was strange, really, because he never fancied himself as anything remarkable. He was a farmer's son, perhaps a little large for his age, already towering nearly a head and a half over his mother, with hands that could wrap themselves around a good sized melon without straining - but not remarkable beyond that, no. He was a farmer's son by birth and he would
probably die a farmer himself. His grandfather was a farmer, his father was a farmer; likely his children would be farmers also, working the same patch of land and living off the modest profits brought in by melons and squash.

He was out picking melons in the near field the first time it happened. It was hot, dry, dusty work, and his mind was prone to wandering. Well, according to his mother his mind was always prone to wandering. But it was even more prone to wandering than usual on a hot day when he'd rather be cooling off in the pond than doing chores.

Well, I had something to say this morning and had a nice long post written up about it, but I can't remember what it is now, because LJ ate it in its HYOOGE server nonbobidda this morning. Fortunately that seems to be mending itself slowly but surely, so we will all say yay about that.
In the meantime, very little is going on. I'm vaguely pissed that the new Belle and Sebastian album isn't available in the US yet; I apparently can't type, because I've had to edit this entry far too much for my own liking; and I found out what happens if you click the box marked 'don't auto-format entry', and resolved not to do that again ever. My life is very low-drama and dull at the moment, and I also apparently can't remember what day it is, because I keep thinking it's friday.
