(the rock is on. the second you don't respect this, it kills you. i love this movie.)

happy day after moon landing day! part of me still thinks it should be an actual us holiday. i mean, we put humans on the moon! it was eight years from the first person in space to the first person to stand on another rock besides earth. that's pretty cool. i celebrated by stuffing my face with fried clams with [livejournal.com profile] tamalinn, friend a, and friend a's hubs, then walking around gloucester (cute seaside town and the home of gorton's seafood - trust the gorton's fisherman :D ) and buying chocolate turtles because who doesn't love a good turtle? right? i did not unpack any more but i thought about it. i also did not find a moon pie but to be fair i didn't look that hard.

and saturday i got a pedicure and went outlet shopping with my sister as is tradition before we go on a big trip. i now own slightly more clothes. but one of my toes is already chipped which, seriously? afterwards we went back to her house and watched mission: impossible iii which i liked better than m:i2. possibly i just liked philip seymour hoffman as a villain better than dougray scott. and we meet benji.

and today i did sweet fuck-all at work (ok, i did something altho now i don't remember what) (oh, right, i collected and set up a lunch for admin d who hurt her wrist and was out) and tonight i unpacked one - count it - box because it's the one with the scarves and winter hats and i've been told i might need to bring a hat to iceland.

and i did sweet fuck-all because i spent so. much. time. last week on the summit. like, tuesday i went home at 11:15. oy. wednesday we lost a bunch of name badges which made us look disorganized (program manager m thinks someone took them to make her look bad) and we offered campus tours for small groups of fifteen and that was a mistake because we actually were disorganized - like, one of the tours left without a couple people and the other two tours somehow swapped tour guides - but! we learned from our mistakes (and also begged around and got more tour guides) and thursday everything went much more smoothly. well, except we still didn't have a bunch of name badges. thursday night was a reception which was delicious and i even got to take home some leftover shrimp bao. i do love a good shrimp. overall i think it was a positive experience for the attendees - we had a contingent of teachers and high schoolers from puerto rico and when i met one of the teachers on friday i swear she was so excited she wanted to hug me - but we're not doing it again next year and i am not sorry about that. i made some good overtime tho.

i assume by now everyone has heard about the ceo who was caught on the kiss cam at a coldplay concert snuggling with the woman he's having an affair with. what a fucking idiot. (altho i don't give her credit for brains either.) it's impressive and scary how fast the video went viral and how fast people figured out who the couple was but come on, if you're going to fuck around on your wife and bang one of your coworkers maybe don't go to such a public event together and don't act all coupley where the kiss cam can find you. he resigned - or possibly was asked to resign? - which is the least he can do.

on this date in 1933 the good voters of oregon voted to repeal a tax on... margarine.

Starting to feel like instead of requesting book recommendations, I should solicit anti-recs. Like, I post a list of the 500 or so books I still have on my TBR and y'all tell me which ones not to bother with and why. (Although saying "move this one to the top of your pile" would also be actionable feedback.)

I did have a brief moment of sanity earlier when I saw someone pointing out a discount on physical copies of the Rivers of London series, which have been recommended to me multiple times. I got as far as the amazon.co.uk checkout page and then closed the browser tab because I was about to repeat the same mistake that I made years ago with the Discworld books which I STILL HAVE NOT READ even though they are taking up an entire shelf.

Anyway, I also have like 18 library books checked out, because I'm thoroughly ridiculous.

Hurry home to you.

I went across town to gather the last of my pay this morning; I'd gotten a text a couple hours earlier telling me that the main receptionist was doing fine and didn't need additional support, so all I had left to do was get paid. I ended up deciding to take that vacation opportunity, with plans to come back fairly early Friday to make the evening showtime.

Worth noting is packing's not nearly the stressor it used to be. Especially not for just a couple of days. Not even music for the trip or what to bring in my backpack. There's no getting around the nervousness that comes from waiting for a train - especially with the downpour earlier this week, which tends to mess with schedules - or trying to fall asleep the night before. But there's a predictability to that, which makes accepting it easier.

happy bastille day, flist! it's also apparently national mac&cheese day in the us. chop off some heads, enjoy some delicious pasta and cheese sauce.

still hot, also.

so on wednesday one of my groups at work (technically one of my groups and a larger group that it belongs to) is hosting a summit through friday and so far it has been a massive pain in our butts. the project manager keeps saying this is the last year and she is not kidding. we still haven't printed the name badges yet because people keep registering. it starts wednesday! we're fully booked! registration is closed! and yet one of the pi's organizing it (or more accurately, one of the pi's who's going to get credit for it but who isn't actually doing anything) keeps telling people they can come. we can't feed them. there's nowhere for them to sit. we're full! but no. on the plus side, we weren't expecting to do better than last year (about 350 people) and until a couple weeks ago we thought we'd be lucky to break even. i mean, no one wants to come to the us and can you blame them? and then suddenly we were fully booked. wtf.

(this morning a woman in another group involved in the summit basically gave me a heart attack by saying "so does the minister [one of the keynote speakers] have transportation from the airport to the hotel?" implication being that the minister was already here - i pictured this poor woman stranded at the airport - even tho the ticket that i booked for her got her in at 7:40 tonight. she did not have a car booked to take her from the airport to the hotel because a. that's not a thing we offer to do for anyone at the summit, and more importantly b. no one told me i needed to do it. turns out she didn't arrive ten hours early. her assistant panicked. and then this other woman involved in the summit panicked. and then she made me and another admin panic. and suddenly the minister's not even here yet and we're all panicking for no reason. the other admin booked her a car and i haven't heard anything so i assume she got here in one piece and got to the hotel in one piece and to be honest i'm glad it came up this morning and not tonight because i sign off at 5:30 and would not have been checking my email if the minister got here and everyone freaked out because she didn't have a car to take her to the hotel because no one told me i needed to book her one.)

booking travel is legitimately part of my job but summit travel is A Lot. the summit is just A Lot. at least i get overtime, and they'll feed me.

last thursday i met some folks from writing group for pizza. it's nice to see them in person since we're still virtual. pizza was good - i split an onion and sausage with writer g who moved to california but comes back for like a month every year - company was fun, getting home was a trial because a bunch of t stations were closed because they were doing work on the line and when i got to an open station... it was closed. whut. even the t employees didn't know what was going on. it took me like two hours and twenty minutes to get home which is absurd. glad i went tho.

saturday unpacked some, dicked around some, met my sister for dinner and superman which i have mixed feelings about. spoilers! )

and sunday i bought a suitcase! i need a big one since my other one broke when i went to italy. it has oranges on it. :D

h-e-b is a texas grocery store chain and one girl went viral on tiktok for taking 200 h-e-b tortillas through airport security in her backpack. the store totally leaned into it. apparently it's a thing and lots of people have taken h-e-b tortillas onto planes in their carryons. i find that incredibly adorable and also delicious.

Got an update from our chorus manager today.

The search for a new chorus director is still getting organized and won't be done until late in the calendar year. They've decided to let the orchestra's associate conductor act as the interim director for our fall performances (B9 & Messiah). He was already going to be conducting the Messiah anyway.

Turns out the reason Carmina Burana wasn't included on the symphony's concert schedule is because we're inexplicably doing it with the local ballet organization instead. Interesting.

We've also been told to pencil in a possible one-night performance in late February, but not what it might be. So there's at least a slim chance we might still do something this season that I haven't already done at least 3 times before. We had earlier been told that we would be involved with The Polar Express, but then they decided to do Muppet Christmas Carol instead.
