Aug. 1st, 2005 10:38 amTerry Pratchett's speech at the 2001 CILIP awards, regarding the nature of fantasy. Good reading, especially for those who read the craptastic Time article recently done on Rowling. When did Time jump the shark? Sad.
I'm sick and tired of people doing anything to avoid catching Genre Fiction Cooties. "Oh, this can't be fantasy, because there's no dragons, so it's *label*." This can't be SF, because there's no spaceships and earth hasn't been decimated, so it's *label*. I don't like SF/fantasy/whatthehellever, but I like this, so it can't be that."
Why don't we just read things that are good, that we enjoy, and stop freaking out about genre?
Oh, that reminds me, I read Cunt yesterday. ( More babbling here )
It's blissfully 68F out there. And overcast. And dreary. Thank GOD.
