phinnia: a borg cube claiming 'we are the canadian borg: resistance would be impolite: please wait to be assimilated.' (canadian borg)
the complete essex county - jeff lemire

one of five finalists for 'canada reads' this year; the first time a graphic novel has been considered, and definitely worth reading even if you're not normally into graphic novels. it is the story of the fictional 'essex county' and its residents, an area between windor and toronto, and the important things that tie them together: a love of hockey (especially the toronto grizzlies/toronto maple leafs), a love of the land, farming and especially family. The art is black and white and absolutely stunning.

the birth house - ami mckay

the story of dora rare, midwife and first daughter in five generations of rares in 1929, and the town of scots bay, nova scotia. as a girl of seventeen she works with m. babineau, an old acadian midwife who is wise in the ways of 'catching babies' and all kinds of herbal and natural medicine. They come up against Dr. Thomas and his flashy new Canning Maternity Home, which promises to give painless births - but at what price?

To be honest - I wasn't sure about this book before I started it. I have a lot of issues around birth. But the story is so incredibly good it sucked me right in and i read it in an afternoon. Highly recommended, especially to [personal profile] eleri, who i know likes this sort of thing, and to anyone interested in historical novels. Or if you just want a good story. It's a really good story.

Only three more books to go, and then that's one resolution down! Of course, that's the relatively easy one, but still...
phinnia: smiling dolphin face (the size that counts)
Mandarin lessons, because of Uncle Bill's Send A Programmer And His Wife (In A Beautiful Pea Green Boat) To China Program™ and because I have to go to Hong Kong before I die
Japanese lessons, because flights to Tokyo are comparatively cheap and I need to see the Shrine For Electronics, and because Japan is just generally cool
Hang the damn curtains because I am full of hate for windowblinds.
Get rid of sofa and procure desk for Programmer.
Attempt to fix credit (eventual goal: buy condo slash loft)
Attempt to find actual effective pain management regimen
Send child to sleepaway camp (eventual goal: continued sanity and real sleep)
Get actual passport and actual green card
Make lots of words happen. Make them good words. Make some of the words go places outside own circle. Lather, rinse, repeat. Getting money for words would be kind of awesome if possible.
Take another vacation.
Regain stamina.
Attempt to turn Pit Of Junk In Corner into actual, usable desk.
Get tattoo.

Make stick in head: I am not going to wake up one morning and be a one dimensional shell of a human being just because I happen to have a child and because I happen to have a vocation that is generally done at home. No matter how much I am terrified of this prospect. I do not need to stick 'probably' anywhere in this first sentence.
Make stick in head: If I spend time doing other things, it's actually easier to make words happen.

Dear Self,

Your writing does not suck. Your writing is good, and the professor said so. You did not do the assignment properly, and so she wants it redone, but that does not mean your writing sucks and you do not need to beat yourself over the head with imaginary fifty-pound hammers.

Hormones, however, do in fact suck, and you should blame this ridiculous behaviour on them.

Relax. Have a flakie mango.
